A supportive and community-centered program helping individuals with developmental disabilities build confidence, strengthen life skills, enjoy meaningful experiences, and form lasting connections.
The Buddy Network is a community-based program created for individuals with developmental disabilities who deserve more than just activities — they deserve connection, purpose, growth, and a true sense of belonging. Our program focuses on helping participants become more comfortable in everyday settings while enjoying social, recreational, and skill-building experiences.
We believe that community involvement should be meaningful, supportive, and enjoyable. Whether participants are learning a new life skill, attending a local event, spending time with peers, or practicing independence in the community, The Buddy Network is built around dignity, friendship, inclusion, and personal growth.
The Buddy Network is an affiliate of The Recreation Team Inc. Together, we provide opportunities that support confidence, social development, independence, and meaningful participation in everyday community life.
My name is Daniel O’Brien, but everyone calls me Danny. I am the youngest of four siblings and grew up in a family deeply connected to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. My parents started a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit agency nearly thirty years ago, and their work has had a major influence on who I am and what I hope to continue building through The Buddy Network.
Because of my parents’ programs, I grew up surrounded by participants who quickly became much more than people my family served — they became part of my extended family. Some of my earliest and most meaningful memories are with the individuals involved in those programs. Summer weekends, vacations, community outings, trips to Disney, California, the Outer Banks, and countless other experiences were shared with the people I have always considered my buddies.
Throughout high school and college, I participated in peer mentorship and helped recruit friends to volunteer as one-on-one buddies for individuals with developmental disabilities. Those relationships shaped the way I see people, community, and service. I have always admired the resilience, strength, humor, and character of the individuals I have been lucky enough to know. They have taught me lessons about patience, kindness, determination, and friendship that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Outside of The Buddy Network, I am currently an undergraduate student at Pennsylvania State University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics. I hope to continue my studies in the legal field and use that path to keep serving and advocating for this community in a meaningful way.
The Buddy Network is my way of continuing the work I was raised around while adding my own vision to it. My goal is to create a program where individuals feel welcomed, respected, included, and excited to participate. I look forward to meeting new buddies, building real relationships, and creating experiences that participants and families can feel proud of.
Our services are designed to support individuals and families through structured programming, community-based experiences, and personalized opportunities for growth. We focus on creating an environment where participants feel welcomed, encouraged, and supported.
Our community classes give participants the chance to learn, socialize, and engage in meaningful activities. These classes are designed to promote confidence, communication, independence, and real-world participation.
Respite services provide individuals with enjoyable, supervised opportunities to participate in activities while also giving families and caregivers valuable support, relief, and peace of mind.
We aim to support the entire family by offering guidance, communication, and programming that helps individuals stay active, connected, and involved in positive experiences outside the home.
Community habilitation focuses on helping individuals build practical skills, increase independence, and take part in everyday community settings with support, encouragement, and structure.
A major part of The Buddy Network is helping participants strengthen the skills they can use in everyday life. Our life skills activities are hands-on, practical, and designed to help individuals feel more capable, independent, and confident.
Participants can practice basic meal preparation, kitchen safety, following recipes, measuring ingredients, and learning how to make simple meals and snacks.
We help participants practice sorting clothes, using machines safely, folding, organizing, and understanding personal care routines.
Participants can work on basic budgeting, identifying costs, making purchases, handling money, comparing prices, and understanding everyday spending choices.
Community outings may include practicing how to make a shopping list, find items, ask for help, check out, and navigate public places appropriately.
Group activities encourage conversation, listening, asking questions, expressing preferences, taking turns, and building confidence in social settings.
Participants can practice following schedules, making choices, planning ahead, staying organized, and developing routines that support greater independence.
The Buddy Network offers a wide variety of recreational and community-based activities. Our goal is to provide experiences that are fun, enriching, and socially meaningful while helping participants become more comfortable and confident in the world around them.
Group trips to amusement parks give participants the chance to enjoy exciting attractions, practice patience, make choices, and share memorable experiences with peers.
Music and live entertainment outings create opportunities for participants to enjoy the community, express themselves, dance, socialize, and experience local events in a supportive group setting.
Educational outings to aquariums and zoos allow participants to explore new environments, learn about animals, ask questions, and enjoy interactive community experiences.
Movie outings and theater experiences offer a relaxed way to spend time with others, practice public behavior, and enjoy shared entertainment.
Recreational activities promote movement, teamwork, confidence, and healthy fun. These may include casual sports, group games, fitness activities, and outdoor recreation.
Dining outings help participants practice ordering food, making choices, using manners, handling money, and enjoying conversation in real-life settings.
Bowling, board games, trivia, and group game nights create fun ways to build friendships, practice turn-taking, and enjoy positive social interaction.
We may participate in seasonal activities such as fairs, festivals, holiday events, outdoor walks, local shows, and other special community experiences.
Activities may vary based on scheduling, availability, participant needs, weather, transportation, and community event options.
